Two persons were killed in Ebonyi State on Monday night as Police and gunmen engaged in a shootout in Abakaliki, capital of the state.

It was gathered that gunmen had staged  another attack on Police at a checkpoint along the Presco Junction axis of the ever busy Enugu-Abakaliki expressway.

The incident, which occurred at about 8pm Monday night created panic and tension along the major express road as motorists and commuters scampered for safety while the exchange of gun battle lasted.

A source in the area said that the gunmen who operated in a motorcycle attacked the police officers on their duty post at the junction.

The source said the exchange of gun battle was so intense and created a lot of panic in the area.

The junction usually witness heavy presence of people who usually come to the place to buy different fruits and other items.

It was gathered that the gunmen on arriving at the junction opened fire on the policemen on duty while the policemen responded immediately resulting in sporadic exchange of fire.

When the gun battle subsided, people who went close observed that a policeman was shot dead while one of the gunmen was also killed.

Police spokesperson, Chris Anyanwu, also confirmed the incident.

Anyanwu said one policeman and an unknown gunman were shot dead during the clash between the Police and the unknown gunmen on Monday night at the Presco in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.
