The Department of State Services, DSS, has finally confirmed that the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, is in its custody.
The confirmation which came from the Spokesperson of the DSS, Peter Afunanya, on Saturday after initial hedging on the matter also warned the media to exercise caution in reporting the story.
“The Department of State Services (DSS) hereby confirms that Mr Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is now in its custody for some investigative reasons.
“The public, particularly the Media, is enjoined to apply utmost caution in the reportage and narratives concerning this,” Afunanya said.
Emefiele was suspended on Friday by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who also ordered the immediate probe of the apex bank.
The CBN governor’s suspension was contained in a statement by the Director of Information, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Willie Bassey.
The suspension, according to the statement was due to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.
The statement said that Emefiele had been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who would act as the CBN Governor pending the conclusion of the investigation and the reforms.
The Deputy Director, Operations Directorate, according to CBN listing is Mr Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi.
