Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has said that they had always maintained that the Muhammadu Buhari government committed massacre against young people protesting police brutality at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos State in 2020 and hid their bodies across the state.
Sowore was reacting to a letter from the Lagos State Government conveying approval to a private funeral company to conduct mass burial for 103 bodies said to be victims of the #EndSars protests in Lagos.
According to the letter dated 19th July 2023, sighted by Ikengaonline, the Lagos State Government through the Lagos State Public Procurement Agency addressed to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, approved the award of contract to the tune of N61, 285, 000.00 to TOS Funeral Services, to execute the mass burial of 103 victims of the 2020 #EndSars protests in Lagos State.
The new development, however, contradicts the official position of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu; the Lagos State Government; and indeed the Federal Government of Muhammadu Buhari, who had insisted that the military did not open fire on innocent protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate, and that no such killings took place.
But Sowore in a series of tweets on Sunday called out the Buhari-led Federal Government and Governor Sanwo-Olu over the surfacing of the award letter of contract for the mass burial of the said #EndSars victims.
“The govt of Muhammadu Buhari @MBuhari denied killing #EndSARS protesters in October of 2020, we’ve always maintained that they massacred protesters and hid their bodies across Lagos state. Recall also that the Lagos State Government also rejected the report of its own Judicial Panel on the Lekki tollgate massacre which all but affirmed that innocent protesters were killed.
