The Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Enugu State, Mr Llyod Ekweremadu has commended Commonwealth Gold medalist, Destiny Agbo and his Coach Mcslyver Ezeikpe, for doing the state proud at the last Commonwealth games.
He said that Youth and Sports were key areas in developing the state.
The commissioner made the commendation when he received Agbo in his office.
He said that the state government was committed to Youth and Sports development.
It would be recalled that Agbo won Gold medal at the just concluded Commonwealth Youth Games, held in Port Louis Trinidad and Tobago from July 30th – 15th August.
The Commissioner explained that Gov. Peter Mbah’ s administration places emphasis on meritocracy of ideas and creativity, as guiding principles in governance.
He noted that the governor carefully selected men of integrity whose vision is to uplift the state.
“Government is interested in removing youths from the street, social vices and crime while efforts are being made to partner with private individuals.
“Also to partner with corporate organisations and other sectors of government to invest in sports because, government alone cannot fund Sports.
“The era of non-recognition and appreciation of athletes who won medals for the state is over. Gov. Mbah, will appreciate and receive Agbo for her heroic feat,” he said.
The Director, Organising, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Boniface Onovo appreciated the governor for giving the youths opportunity to showcase their talents in the state and beyond.
Earlier, Coach Mcslyver Ezeikpe, who thanked the commissioner for receiving them, regretted that Enugu State Government did not receive nor appreciate athletes who won medals for the state.
Agbo, then thanked her coaches Mcslyver Ezeikpe and Chukwuemeka Okafor for discovering and nurturing her.
