The flyover bridge along the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway at the Enugu New Artisan market in Enugu State capital on Monday collapsed, thereby causing gridlock, confusion and anxiety around the Artisan area.

The bridge was reported to have collapsed in the early hours of Monday before the people came out for their various businesses.

An Eye witness said that no casualty was recorded as drivers and conductors of two trucks which were on the bridge at the time, escaped unhurt.

Ikengaonline reports that one lane of the Enugu–Port Harcourt dual-carriage way had been blocked by the debris of the collapsed bridge forcing motorists to divert through alternative routes to continue their journey.

Security operatives, officials of the Federal and Enugu State Ministries of Works, Federal Road Maintenance Agency, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) were sighted within the area to assess the situation as well as to assist the road users plying the alternative routes.

Meanwhile, the Enugu State Ministry of Works has advised motorists to follow alternative routes to get to their destinations.

A statement signed the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Gerald Otiji said: “The Enugu State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure wishes to notify the General public of bridge collapse which occurred on 25th September 2023 along Kilometer One, Enugu Port Harcourt Expressway, i.e, between Naira Triangle and Goshen Flyover.

“The general public and road users are hereby advised to detour to Nza through New Haven, or Ogui Road to their  various destinations, while the authorities are coming up with measures for immediate repair on the failed section.
