Farmers living with disabilities in flood-affected communities in Anambra State have received financial aid to support their farming activities in the state.
The aid was provided by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), a principal UN agency in the field of migration.
Addressing the farmers in Awka, IOM Anambra Field Coordinator, Hezekiah Samuel, said the initiative was to alleviate the hardship faced by these farmers due to their sudden migration from coastal areas to internally displaced centers.
He emphasised IOM’s role as a UN Migration Organisation, supporting those affected by floods in Anambra and other states, with a focus on promoting humane and orderly migration.
“We understand that persons with disabilities are particularly vulnerable during natural disasters,” said Mr. Samuel.
“This card contains thirty thousand naira, and a special pin has been provided for withdrawal. It’s IOM’s way of lending a helping hand to alleviate the hardship caused by the last flooding.”
Mr. Thomas Mark Onugbolu from the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency urged the farmers to utilise the support effectively, appreciating IOM for transparent project execution.
Mr Ikechukwu Ezeokafor, representing the farmers and the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities Anambra State Chapter, expressed gratitude to IOM and looked forward to future engagements.
The Chairman of Anambra State Disability Rights Commission, Bar Chuks Ezewuzie, commended Mr. Chris Azor, the chairman of Anambra State Network of Civil Societies for his noble role in notifying IOM about the commission.
He appreciated IOM for supporting farmers with disabilities affected by the flood, highlighting that this partnership marks the first of its kind for the commission and expressed readiness for future collaborations.
