The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, has commended two lawmakers from the state for their efforts so far at the National Assembly.

NUJ gave the commendation in a communique issued at the end of its November Congress held at the NUJ secretariat complex in Awka, the state capital.

The communique which was signed by the Chairman, Dr Odogwu Emeka Odogwu; and Secretary, Comrade Aloysius Ofodile, commended the efforts of Senator Victor Umeh, who is representing Anambra Central Senatorial district; and Hon Lilian Orogbu, a member representing Awka South and North Federal constituency, for the motion moved, and standing firm for justice for the citizenry.

It read partly: “Congress commended efforts of some Anambra representatives in the federal legislature for standing up for justice, mentioning specifically the motion by Hon Lilian Orogbu (representing Awka North and South Federal Constituency) on the non-payment of salaries of some staff members of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka and the intervention by Senator Victor Umeh (representing Anambra Central) in the issue of house demolitions at Abule-Ado in Lagos State.”

Umeh, who is the Vice Chairman Senate Committee on Land, Housing and Urban Development was concerned about the huge losses and the outcry over the ongoing demolitions has held fruitful deliberations with the Managing Director of Federal Housing Authority, Senator Gbenga Ashafa, and the General Manager, Zonal Coordination of FHA, Barrister Hajara Kadiri towards resolving the Issues and halting further demolitions.

Meanwhile, Orogbu’s motion for an investigation into the delay in capturing and payment of some staff of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, by the authorities of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), has seen an ad hoc Committee set up by the House of Representatives.

The committee has invited Unizik Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Charles Okechukwu Esimone, for further clarification and confirmation.
