Yet to be identified gunmen, Friday night, abducted the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the Abia State University Uturu, ABSU, Professor Godwin Emezue.
He was abducted at a petrol station near his village at Umuokpara area of Umuahia, the state capital.
Reports say he had gone to the petrol station in the company of his wife to buy fuel when the incident occured.
His abductors were said to have dragged him out of his car into their own waiting Lexus SUV jeep and drove off after collecting the wife’s ATM cards.
According to the wife, the gunmen fled towards the border with Imo State.
Registrar of the university, Dr Acho Elendu, confirmed the incident, describing it as “very unfortunate.”
He, however, said that information was still sketchy about the incident.
The Abia State Police Command is yet to confirm the incident as the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Maureen Chinaka, did not pick calls put across to her.
There have been pockets of kidnapping incidents especially around Umuahia the state capital despite efforts by security operatives and the State Government to contain insecurity in the state.
Just towards the end of 2023, four children of same parents were stollen by a tricycle operator engaged to convey them to school.
Similarly, a new tenant at Ubakala Street Umuahia bolted away with four children of her neighbours.
Two of the victims were later rescued by security agents.
