Abia State Government has advised residents on some precautionary measures to be able to survive the health hazards triggered by the increasing climate change.

The State Government said the advice had become necessary to avoid the suffering from the various adverse effects of the worsening weather changes.

Commissioner for Environment, Mr Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, in a statement, noted that the adverse effect of the current situation ranges from dehydration which can lead to fainting, contacting of chicken pox, heat rashes and mental stress.

The statement said that the heat waves could lead to skin cancer, meningitis and in the worst case scenario death.

It recalled that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) had advised on how to prepare for change in climatic conditions.

The statement, therefore, advised residents to heed recommendations by experts in order to stay alive.

It said that Government would not hesitate to put in place any measures that would help residents survive the period.

The statement made available to Ikengaonline further read: “Abia State Government, therefore, advises Ndi Abia and residents to adhere to the recommendations by the experts in order to curb the threat associated with the heat waves.

“The recommendations include that they should, drink more water and stay hydrated, avoid more consumption of alcoholic beverages and caffeinated beverages, reduce intake of food rich in proteins because they increase metabolic activities as fresh foods and fruits are better alternatives, stay indoors between 12 noon and 4:30pm, take cold bath before going to bed at night, monitor their blood pressure always.”

“While the State Government is reassuring the people of its commitment to their welfare and security, Abians are reminded that health is wealth and that they should do all they can to live a healthy life.”
