The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council has urged Governor Chukwuma Soludo to call the state’s task force in charge of demolishing illegal structures and revenue generation to order.
The Union said the task force members of the government are inflicting pain and hardship on the people of the state in the name of demolishing illegal structures and internal revenue generation for the government.
A communique signed by the Council Chairman, Dr Odogwu Emeka Odogwu; and Secretary, Sir Aloysius Ofodile; after its February Congress, condemned the activities of the state task force, urging the governor to curtail the level or stop the barbaric actions of task force members who it said glorify violence in the state.
The communique read partly, “We condemn the activities of the overzealous task force members of Anambra State Government who are used to inflicting pains on so many individuals while demolishing what they call illegal structures in some parts of the state or hunting some people in internal revenue generation for the government.
“We advise the Governor to direct his government officials to ensure civility and humanness in dealing with demolition of the obvious illegal structures and avoid destroying one’s goods alongside the illegal structures, in the present biting economic condition of the country.”
NUJ also advised the government to sit up to its responsibility of safeguarding the people from the increasing rate of crime and criminality in the state and the country at large.
Commending the government for its interventions in road construction, it called for increased efforts towards improving the condition of many roads in abysmal condition within the state possibly before the rainy season of 2024.
