Police in Anambra State have reassured residents of their drive to eliminate cultism, kidnappings, and all manner of crimes and criminality in the state.
The commissioner of police, CP Aderemi Adeoye, said the command has reactivated its anti-cult and anti-crime units and other strategies towards ensuring that the resurgence of kidnapping and cultism is halted in different parts of the state.
The Commissioner gave the assurance at the NUJ Secretariat Awka during a summit tagged, “Finishing Strong,” organised in his honour for what he has done in the state as commissioner of police.
Briefing Journalists on the command’s exploits and achievements under his watch, the CP who was represented by the DCP in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Akin Fakorede, said police have been able to tone down the rate of crime and killings in the state following successful raids on criminal hideouts in the state.
“If you know Anambra before and now, you would confirm that there is calm now. Before there were multiple cases of cult killings, kidnappings, and raids on stations here and there, but one of the achievements of the incumbent police is the stoppage of crime, especially cult killings.
“Today, Police in Anambra have improved in all aspects including intelligence, weaponry and personnel capacity,” he said.
Ikengaonline recalled that the CP’s maiden press briefing, barely one week in office, was a parade of suspected criminal gangs that were causing havoc in different parts of the state.
The command, at the time, also recovered other dangerous weapons belonging to dare-devil criminals after series of raids at their camps in the state.
Speaking further, the CP said the command has perceived resurgence of cult and kidnapping activities in Awka and environs and assured that police are not sleeping until crime is eliminated.
“Recently, we have noticed a few isolated cases of cultism coming up again. The recent activities have not gone unnoticed but we have reactivated our anti-cultism unit and it is in our plans to carry out offensive actions against them.”
The CP commended the Anambra State Government led by Professor Chukwuma Soludo for its support towards policing activities in the state. He also commended Nigeria Union of Journalists led by Dr Odogwu Emeka Odogwu for their roles and contributions to crime fighting in the state.
