The Nigeria Police Force, Abia State Command, has ordered investigations into the alleged drowning of an Air Force cadet inside the swimming pool of a popular hotel in Umuahia, Abia State capital.

Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Maureen Chinaka, who stated this Friday, said that the attention of the Central Police Station, CPS, Umuahia had been drawn to the incident.

She said the matter would be investigated.

The Air Force cadet on ‘pass,’ was said to have visited the said hotel on Tuesday, and gone to swim at the swimming pool around evening time.

His body was said to have been recovered around 9:00 pm by Men of the Abia State Fire Service.

A source which pleaded anonymity was quoted as saying that the deceased went to the facility to swim at a time the pool was undergoing renovation.

The body of the officer was later confirmed dead at the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia.

A hospital source confirmed to Ikengaonline that the deceased was already dead when he was brought to the hospital.

“He was confirmed dead on arrival, and there was nothing we could have done to revive him,” the source said.

Efforts to confirm the incident were rebuffed by the Receptionist when Ikengaonline visited the hotel strategically located near Abia Government House, Umuahia.

The receptionist who claimed that the Management of the hotel had gone out for investigation, declined further comments on the matter.

Meanwhile, it was not clear yet as at the point of filing this report, whether or not the cadet came to the hotel alone or with anybody.

It was also not clear whether or not there were any visitors or staff at the usually very-busy hotel bar located in front of the swimming pool when the cadet dived into the pool.
