Enugu State Commissioner for Youth and Sports,Barrister Lloyd Ike Ekweremadu, has explained that the Zenith Bank Coal City Half Marathon, scheduled for Saturday May 4, in Enugu has the potential of boosting sports tourism and improve the economy of the State.
Speaking to newsmen in Enugu, Ekweremadu noted that winner of the event will take home N1 million, second position N500,000, 3rd prize N300,000 for both, male and female participants.
According to him, from 4th to 20th winners will go home with N10,000 consolation prize each, adding that Enugu State athletes who win prizes will be rewarded by the state government.
He further explained that the race which will commence at the gate of Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Ogui Road Enugu, has the support, sponsorship and technical assistance of Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN).
Ekweremmadu further disclosed that technical officials, will be on designated routes to give tags to runners.
He informed that 15 States in Nigeria, 100 elite and numerous athletes have indicated their interests to participate in the event.
The commissioner asserted that the Federal Road Safety Corps will be on duty to help clear designated routes, while appealing to motorists to use other routes from 7 am – 10:30 am.
“There are enough ambulances; TV and medical professionals will be on ground to handle any emergency,” Ekweremmadu said.
