As the United Nations marks World’s Clean Up Day today (September 20), Governor Alex Otti has urged Abia residents to key into the state’s recycling initiative aimed at revolutionalising waste management in the state.
This is as the Governor cautioned against dumping of waste at unauthorised places or drainages which according to him, leads to flooding and environmental hazards.
The Governor in his message to mark the day, restated his administration’s commitment to timely and efficient waste evacuation to keep the state clean.
According to the message released by the General Manager, Abia State Environmental Protection Agency ASEPA, Hon. Ogbonnia Okereke, residents are also enjoined to bag waste in biodegradable materials for proper disposal.
Otti said his administration had made some significant strides in environmental cleanliness and public health.
The statement said this year’s theme, ‘Committment to a cleaner Future,’ aligns perfectly with the Otti administration’s ongoing efforts to revolutionise waste management in Abia State.
It noted that before the inception of Otti’s administration, “the cities of Aba and Umuahia were notorious for being overrun by waste—an unsightly and dangerous situation that threatened the health of residents.”
The statement read: “Recognising the urgency of the waste crisis, Gov. Otti swiftly declared a state of emergency on waste management upon assuming office.
“A dedicated task force was immediately mobilized to tackle the backlog of waste that had accumulated over time. Within weeks, our major cities and towns were rid of the filth that once plagued them.
“Today, Abia State is not only cleaner but is also undergoing a complete transformation in its waste management system. Our commitment is to ensure that Abia transitions into a model state for modern and sustainable waste management practices.”
“As part of our modern waste management strategy, Abia State has embraced the United Nations Zero Waste Agenda and the Circular Economy Model, which seeks to convert waste into valuable resources such as consumer goods, fertilizers, and energy.”
The statement urged residents to pay sanitation fees promptly to enable ASEPA function more efficiently.
“ASEPA remains committed to quick and efficient waste evacuation from collection points, residences, businesses, and markets. Our goal is to maintain a healthy and clean Abia for all,” it added.
