The MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited Enugu said it has begun comprehensive metering of consumers in Enugu metropolis to eliminate estimated billing.
The Managing Director of the company, Dr. Ernest Mupwaya, disclosed this at a stakeholders’ engagement in Enugu.
Dr. Mupwaya used the occasion to introduce MainPower’s strategic initiatives aimed at transforming electricity distribution and enhancing customer service in Enugu State.
He announced that MainPower would commence metering next week with free installations prioritised in high-loss areas, aimed at covering all customers by 2027.
He emphasised that accurate and transparent billing will allow customers to pay only for what they consume, promoting fairness and encouraging energy conservation.
“A critical component of MainPower’s service improvement plan is the rollout of a comprehensive metering programme to eliminate estimated billing,” he said.
He noted that MainPower aimed to meter all customers by 2027, with free installations prioritised in high-loss areas from 2024 to 2027.
According to him, this initiative is expected to foster greater customer trust while improving MainPower’s revenue assurance.
MainPower is a subsidiary of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), set up to address the specific power needs of Enugu residents, ensuring reliable, transparent, and efficient energy services.
“The company’s creation aligns with Nigeria’s recent regulatory reforms focused on creating a customer-centered power distribution system that supports innovation and customer engagement to drive improvements in reliability and service,” he said.
Mupwaya outlined the company’s objectives, emphasising the company’s commitment to achieving 24/7 electricity supply across Enugu State over the next three years.
He said: “This ambitious goal will be reached through a phased approach, beginning with urban and commercial hubs and expanding to all residential customers.
“Supporting this vision requires substantial infrastructure upgrades and partnerships with independent power producers (IPPs) to secure the necessary additional power sources.
“MainPower’s mission aligns with broader regulatory reforms aimed at sustainable and efficient power distribution.”
He further said that MainPower was also forging partnerships with private investors to expedite meter installations and enhance its distribution network.
The MD said that these collaborations would bring additional resources, expertise, and advanced technology, enabling MainPower to make faster and more cost-effective improvements.
“With increased investment in metering and infrastructure, MainPower aims to build a more resilient and reliable distribution network capable of handling the rising demand for electricity across Enugu,” he added.
