Osita Ogbu, Professor of Economics, at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has charged Nigerian Journalists to seek more knowledge so as to play the role of shaping society.
Ogbu made the call on Tuesday in Enugu while delivering a lecture entitled, “Journalism in a Developing Economy: The Dignity of Professional Practice,” to mark the 2024 NUJ Press Week.
“As the fourth estate of the realm, you are the flag bearers of the society; you are expected to shape the opinions of our political leaders.
“But you cannot shape public opinion when you lack broader knowledge; you must educate yourself,” he said.
The emeritus professor further admonished Journalists to always dress smartly and look decent at all times as their job required meeting people of all classes.
According to him, to shape the society, it means that Journalists must interact and interface with people of all classes hence the need for them to appear decent and smart.
Ogbu said that many Journalists did not understand the level of responsibility they carry on their shoulders.
“Journalism is a serious assignment. Journalists themselves don’t understand the enormous roles they play in the society,” he said.
The versatile professor charged the leadership of NUJ to check the behavioural attitude of Journalists as many of their behaviours call to question the integrity of the profession.
“There must be a code of conduct for Journalists and regular trainings for them to effectively play their role of shaping our society,” Ogbu said.
Speaking, the Chairman of NUJ, Enugu State Council, Mr Sam Udekwe, said the press week was celebrated annually to reflect on the profession.
“This is our annual ritual: we do this in order to reflect on the profession and appraise our ourselves and chart a way forward,” Udekwe said.
Highlight of the occasion was awards to two individuals including a member of the House of Representatives, Chidi Obeta, representing Nsukka/Igboeze South Federal Constituency of Enugu State, and Dr Ike Chioke, Managing Director, Afrinvest limited for their immense contributions to the society.
Receiving the award of Excellence by NUJ, Enugu State Council, the representative of Chidi Obeta, Dr Okwy Ossai thanked the NUJ for the award.
Ossai said that within one year in office, the lawmaker had remained focused in pursuing his goal of uplifting the lives of the people of his constituency.
“In the past one year, Chidi Obeta, has empowered several less privileged members of his constituency and contributed to the common good of the society.
“He is a man, who is driven by a sense of responsibility and compassion, always striving to provide opportunities for youths and making meaningful contributions to society’s transformation,” Ossai said.
On his part, Chioke thanked the NUJ for finding him worthy of the award.
The press week climaxes on Friday December 6, 2024.
