The Police in Enugu State, has arrested one Sunday Echegi, of Ibagwa-Ani in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State for chopping off the hand of his wife, Mrs. Chinonso Loveth Echegi, following a heated argument.
According to the Police: “Operatives attached to Okpuje Division, on January 26, 2025, arrested one Sunday Echege, a 33-year-old male resident of Ibagwa-Agu Farm Settlement in Ibagwa-Ani community, Nsukka LGA, for severing the left wrist of his wife, Chinonso Echegi.
“The arrest was made possible with the assistance of law-abiding members of the community, and the machete used in committing the crime was recovered from the suspect.
“Preliminary investigations reveal that the suspect, who has confessed to the crime, claimed he acted out of suspicion that his wife was involved in extramarital affairs.
“The suspect will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.”
According to the Police Spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, psc (+), has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to ensure a thorough and timely investigation, followed by the prosecution of the suspect.
“He further urged couples to resolve their differences through love, understanding, and legal means, rather than resorting to violent criminal acts,” Ndukwe said.
Meanwhile, the victim was said to have been rushed to Ketochukwu Hospital in Nsukka, where she received emergency care for her injuries.
According to Eyewitnesses account said the couple had been engaged in a heated argument when the husband suddenly dashed into the house, retrieved a machete, and attempted to strike his wife on the head.
She raised her hands to shield herself, resulting in one hand being completely severed and the other badly injured.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, Jude Asogwa, has visited Echegi at Ketochukwu Hospital to assess her condition and express sympathy.
During the visit, he condemned the attack and described it as a barbaric act that should have no place in society.
It was learnt that the victim was on Tuesday morning transferred to the Enugu State University of Science and Technology Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Enugu for proper treatment.
