The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Professor Joseph Ikechebelu has ordered a full-scale investigation into the incident of assault that involved a lecturer and a student of the institution.
A video that went viral on Tuesday captured a female student of History and International Studies, Precious Mbakwe, attacking a lecturer who had asked her to delete a video he appeared in.
Reports had it that the student, who is in her 3rd-year, was recording a dance video in the school hallway when she clashed with the lecturer.
Ikengaonline learned from the video that the lecturer, Dr Chukwudi Okoye, of the department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies, had tapped her on the shoulder while passing and asked her to excuse him.
She allegedly made a sly remark, which the lecturer overheard, prompting him to return to see if Precious was his student. He then requested that she delete the video to which she refused. The incident degenerated to a scuffle and struggle in which she bit him and tore his clothes.
Following the incident, the varsity management in a statement signed by the acting Head of Information, Njelita Louis, said the matter will be taken seriously in line with the Institution’s core values.
“In line with our core values of discipline, self-reliance and excellence, and in adherence to the principles of fair hearing, equity and justice, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof Joseph Ikechebelu has ordered a full-scale, transparent, and unbiased investigation into the matter.
“We urge all concerned parties and members of the public to remain calm as we diligently pursue the truth. The university is committed to upholding discipline and decorum and we will ensure that appropriate actions and sanctions are taken based on the outcome of the investigation.
“Nnamdi Azikiwe University remains an Institution of learning that upholds high moral and ethical standards. There is no place for indiscipline, misconduct, or any form of unacceptable behavior within our community. Further updates will be provided as necessary.”
