The host of the online podcast Moye’s Corner, Miss Omoye, has urged Nigerian women to closely monitor the implementation of the proposed law seeking to create reserved seats for women in the country’s legislative houses.
Omoye cautioned that male politicians might hijack the process and install their girlfriends as beneficiaries instead of competent women genuinely committed to public service.
She made the remarks during an exclusive interview with Rudolf Okonkwo on 90MinutesAfrica.
While acknowledging that the bill, when passed, would enable more women to participate in lawmaking, Omoye expressed skepticism about its execution.
“In the Nigerian system, politicians may hijack the process and fill the seats with their girlfriends who don’t care about the people and know nothing about service,” she said.
The social commentator urged citizens to scrutinize the process and ensure that only credible women are presented to occupy the reserved seats when the bill becomes law.
Omoye further emphasized that while gender inclusion in politics is vital, the quality of representation remains even more important.
“We have four women in the Senate, but only one is making an impact. Imagine if the other three had been as effective,” she noted.
“It’s good to have more women in the National Assembly, but the question is: what type of women will be representing us?”
She also lamented the state of governance in the country, describing Nigeria as “rotten to the core,” and called for a “hard reset” to put the nation back on track.
“Nigeria needs people who will clean out all the garbage,” she said, warning that it is difficult to envision a functional Nigeria beyond 2027 if the current trajectory of poor governance and corruption continues.
