Former Finance Minister and Caretaker Committee Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, has been elected as the substantive National Chairman of the party.
She emerged at the party’s 2026 elective National Convention held on Tuesday in Umuahia, Abia State, marking a significant turning point in the party’s leadership structure.
Also elected is a former member of the House of Representatives for Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, Hon. Acho Obioma, who now assumes office as the National Secretary.
Obioma succeeds Senator Darlington Nwokocha, who previously served in the same capacity under the party’s Caretaker Committee.
The newly constituted National Working Committee (NWC) was produced through a consensus arrangement, underscoring efforts by party stakeholders to maintain unity and stability within the Labour Party.
Labour Party leader and Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, serving members of the National Assembly elected on the party’s platform, as well as other chieftains and delegates from across the country, were present at the convention.
A delegation of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), led by two National Commissioners, monitored the exercise.
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) were also present at the rancour-free convention.
