Governor Peter Mbah has inaugurated the Enugu State Persons with Disabilities (PwD) Commission Board, aimed at ensuring the full integration of persons with disabilities into society.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, the governor said the commission is saddled with responsibilities that include enhancing the education, healthcare, and economic well-being of persons with disabilities in the state.
He disclosed that members of the board will serve a four-year tenure, adding that they were carefully selected to provide strategic guidance and oversight in implementing the commission’s mandate to promote and protect the rights of persons with disabilities.
Mbah noted that the board would formulate and implement policies to advance the education and social development of PwDs, while also working to improve public attitudes towards them.
“The board will promote and improve the general social well-being of people with disabilities by encouraging the public to change their attitude towards them,” he said.
He added that the board would take measures to equip persons with disabilities with the knowledge and qualifications needed to access diverse opportunities.
The governor also charged the commission with ensuring effective monitoring and evaluation of government policies targeted at improving the lives of persons with disabilities.
Responding on behalf of other members, the board chairman, Jude Ezeh, thanked the governor for the opportunity and pledged to discharge their duties diligently.
