Manchester United have dismissed head coach Ruben Amorim after 14 months in charge, according to reports.
Amorim’s departure was conveyed in a terse statement released by the club on Monday morning.
“Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United.
“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.
“The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.”
The decision is understood to have followed a breakdown in relationships behind the scenes. Amorim’s departure comes after Sunday’s 1–1 draw with Leeds United, a result that leaves the club sixth in the Premier League table.
The Portuguese manager will officially leave his role with immediate effect. Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher has been appointed as interim head coach while the club begins the search for a permanent replacement.
Amorim departs Old Trafford having recorded 24 wins from 63 matches in all competitions—one of the lowest win ratios of any permanent manager in the club’s history.
