The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has disassociated herself from a fake Ponzi scheme video currently circulating online.
In a statement posted on her official X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, Okonjo-Iweala described the video— which promises huge returns on investment of up to ₦2.6 million within the first month— as “fake and AI-manipulated,” warning Nigerians to be vigilant to avoid being duped.
The former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy said that although the authorities are already handling the matter, it was important to personally alert the public.
She clarified that she does not operate or post content on Instagram, Facebook or WhatsApp, stressing that any message or video from those platforms bearing her image did not originate from her. According to her, X (formerly Twitter) remains her only official social media platform.
“Just alerting Nigerians. Another fake AI-manipulated video. The authorities are handling it. I just wanted to alert you to be aware of this,” she said.
“As I have repeatedly said, I never post anything on Instagram, Facebook or WhatsApp. Anything emanating from these sources with my image is not from me. I only post on Twitter/X. I don’t want people to be duped.”
