The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark, has declared that the party will not yield to mounting political pressure, vowing to remain firm in the face of intimidation.
Mark spoke on Tuesday at the party’s 2026 national convention in Abuja, where over 3,000 delegates gathered to elect members of the National Working Committee for a new four-year term.
In a defiant tone, the former Senate President said the ADC would stand its ground despite what he described as a shrinking democratic space.
“We will not bow, we will not be cowed, and we will not retreat,” he said, stressing that the stakes go beyond partisan politics to the survival of democracy in Nigeria.
Mark argued that adversity has strengthened the party rather than weakened it, noting that external pressures have deepened internal cohesion and expanded its coalition base. He maintained that a credible and resilient opposition remains vital to sustaining democratic governance.
He pointed to rising public demand—particularly among young Nigerians—for accountability, transparency, and purposeful leadership, positioning the ADC as a viable alternative platform.
According to him, the party’s ambition transcends the pursuit of power, focusing instead on proving that democracy can deliver tangible improvements in citizens’ lives.
Mark also called for greater unity among opposition leaders, urging them to set aside partisan differences in what he described as a patriotic effort to address the nation’s challenges.
He commended party members for successfully conducting congresses nationwide despite logistical and political hurdles, adding that the ADC is consolidating its grassroots presence and broadening participation.
Charging newly elected officials, Mark emphasised the need for accountability, inclusiveness, and service, insisting that leadership within the party must reflect unity and discipline.
Reaffirming the party’s core principles, he said no member would be above its constitution, regardless of status.
He assured Nigerians that the ADC would prioritise people-centred governance, protect citizens’ welfare, and ensure the prudent use of national resources to improve living standards.
Mark expressed optimism that, with unity and commitment, the party would play a decisive role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic future.
