Arsenal have won their appeal against Myles Lewis-Skelly’s red card as Michael Oliver’s controversial decision has been reversed by the FA.

Lewis-Skelly was dismissed during the first half of Saturday’s match after a late challenge on Wolves defender Matt Doherty. The incident occurred just outside the Wolves penalty area in the 43rd minute, with referee Oliver deeming the tackle worthy of a straight red card for serious foul play. It was reviewed by VAR official Darren England, who upheld the on-field decision. As a result, Lewis-Skelly faced a three-match suspension that would have seen him miss some crucial upcoming fixtures.

Following the match, Arsenal wasted no time in filing an appeal against the decision, arguing that the dismissal was unwarranted. The appeal was reviewed by an independent Regulatory Commission appointed by the FA, who ultimately sided with the north London club.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the FA said: “An independent Regulatory Commission has upheld a claim of wrongful dismissal in relation to Myles Lewis-Skelly and removed his three-match suspension. The Arsenal player was sent off for serious foul play during their Premier League fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, 25 January 2025.”
Mikel Arteta was naturally overjoyed with the decision and said: “Obviously very happy that a decision has been made and Myles is going to be able to play again.”

The successful appeal comes as a significant relief for Arsenal, who are contending with a busy and competitive schedule. Now, he will be available for selection when Arsenal face Manchester City this Sunday in what promises to be a critical Premier League showdown.
