The Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, on Thursday inspected the ongoing 44.1-kilometre Enugu–Ugwogo Nike–Opi–Nsukka dual carriageway project, describing it as a critical socioeconomic lifeline for residents of the state.
During the inspection tour, the governor assessed the pace and quality of work on the corridor, which links Enugu to Nsukka through Ugwogo Nike and Opi.
Beyond reviewing construction progress, he said he also visited identified security flashpoints along the route, stressing that infrastructure development must be complemented by enhanced security measures.
“Infrastructure and security must go hand in hand,” he stated, noting that the government has mapped out immediate engineering interventions to address security concerns along the corridor.
The governor disclosed plans to establish a forward operating base to permanently tackle security threats in the area, with a view to restoring safety and public confidence on the road.
Expressing satisfaction with the level of work done so far, he commended the contractor for maintaining quality standards and keeping to schedule. He added that with proper funding and strict adherence to timelines, the contractor has reaffirmed its commitment to complete the project by October 2026.
According to him, the dual carriageway will not only enhance connectivity between communities but also unlock economic opportunities and strengthen safety along one of the state’s most strategic transport corridors.
He assured residents that the administration would continue to carry out routine inspections to ensure that every kilometre of the project is delivered to the highest standard.
