The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed the election for Enugu East senatorial district of Enugu State following the death of Mr Oyibo Chukwu candidate of the Labour Party.
The State Chairman of LP, Mr Casmir Agbo, made this known on Friday while giving update on the death of the candidate during an interaction with Journalists.
He said: “I have been in touch with the State Resident Electoral Commission (REC). He advised me on what to do which I did.
“We wrote to INEC through our national office and the commission, in line with sections (31) and (34) of the Electoral Act shifted the election for the district to 14 days.”
The chairman said that the postponement was to enable the party conduct a fresh primary in line with the law.
“So, we are going to conduct fresh primary to choose another candidate to represent our party,” he said.
Agbo described the death of Chukwu as tragic and unfortunate and condemnable by any well meaning person who value human life.
“I am saying that his death is politically premeditated and whoever masterminded the killing will get the repercussion, Agbo said.
He said that the Police was too quick to conclude that the killing was done by the ESN/IPOB terrorists, adding that security agencies should conduct proper investigation into the killing.
“It was too hasty for the police to indict ESN/IPOB without proper investigation. They have interviewed me as I speak.
“I have informed all security operatives in the state; the Army; the Police; the DSS; and Civil Defence;” he said
He said that the death of Chukwu would be a turning point to the victory of the Labour Party in Enugu State.”
He called on party members not to despair but remain strong and hopeful in the “struggle to reclaim Enugu State.”
