The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says its men will work hard to reduce highway crashes during the Yuletide.
The FRSC, Enugu Sector Command, Corps Commander Joseph Udoabba disclosed this during a town-hall meeting with stakeholders in University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu.
Udoabba was represented at the event by the Deputy Corps Commander, Logistics, DCC Anthony Ogbodo.
The corps commander, however, said that motorists needed to obey traffic rules and regulations in order to achieve the target.
He said that the town-hall meeting was one of the measures to educate motorists on some of the safety measures aimed at reducing highway carnage.
Udoabba said that the meeting was in furtherance of the synergy the FRSC had with the UNTH.
According to the corps commander, there are bound to be challenges on the roads, especially, if motorists drive against traffic.
He advised motorists to always be on their seatbelts and in possession of their drivers’ license.
Udoabba also urged passengers to call drivers to order when they were involved in reckless driving.
“As a passenger, you have the right to correct reckless drivers or report them to officers at a checkpoint. Safety is everyone’s business,” Udoabba said.
Also, the Ozalla Unit Commander, FRSC, ACC Petronilla Udeinya, said that the meeting would enable the corps to give account of its responsibilities and get input from stakeholders.
Udeinya said that the Federal Government had given the FRSC tremendous support to align the corps with global trends and innovations on traffic management.
She, however, said that the giant strides recorded by the FRSC would be a mirage without the complementary input of all, especially, road users.
Also, the Chief Medical Director, UNTH, Prof. Obinna Onodugo, said that the medical institution was appreciative of the collaboration it had with the FRSC.
Onodugo was represented by the Head, Public Relations, UNTH, Mr Cyril Keleze.
The medical director said that the presence of the unit command in Ozalla had brought sanity to vehicular movements along that axis.
“We have never had it so good and the Ozalla Unit Command should receive the credit. It has been a positive relationship since the current unit commander resumed,” he said.
Onodugo said that the management of the institution would do its best to support the work of the FRSC, including prompt response to the needs of accident victims brought by officers of the corps.
