Ahead of the 2023 general election campaigns, workers within the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra State, have drummed up support for the  presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi; the Anambra Central Senatorial Candidate, Senator Victor Umeh; and other candidates vying for various elective positions under the LP platform in Anambra State.

The workers described the LP candidates as the most qualified and experienced to tackle the mirage of problems currently confronting all parts of the country.

Prof. Chike Okoye, of Poetry and Postcolonial Literature, Department of English Language and Literature, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, who spoke to journalists shortly after meeting with LP candidates lead by Senator Victor Umeh, in Awka, on Tuesday, said the Unizik workers were poised to deliver victory for the Party candidates at all levels in the forthcoming general election, on the ground that any worker in Nigeria is a registered member of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), that form the Labour Party.

He said the meeting organised by the representatives of the four major academic unions in Nigerian universities, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-academic Staff Union (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), was to brainstorm on how to ensure victory for our great party.

“We envisage a new country which will bring back our glory as one nation bound in prosperity, peace and unity.”

The join ticket of Obi/Ahmed has all it would take to address the failures of the All Progressives Congress, APC, led government at the centre.

According to Prof. Okoye, the Labour Party structures has come to stay and this structure is important for saving Nigeria under Peter Obi, if given the opportunity to lead the government at the centre.

“Labour Party is our own Constituency. We are all members of NLC and TUC that gave birth to Labour Party in Nigeria.

“We are all supporting Mr Obi/Ahmed, Senator Umeh and all other LP candidates, because, we believe that they have the competency to resolve the security, education, economic and other social-political challenges confronting the country,” he added.

In his speech, Senator Umeh, who spoke on behalf of other candidates, said the party was still in the period of consultation with concerned stakeholders including the academic communities, which he noted are in position to guard appropriate action in the society and who know the issue at stake in the country.

He assured the workers of good representation, if the party is given the chance to govern the nation.
