Two persons have been killed while a policeman sustained wounds in a resumed boundary dispute between two Ebonyi communities.
The crisis is between Abaomege and Isinkwo communities of Onicha Local Government Area.
Details of what led to the outbreak were sketchy but it was gathered that the incident happened around 7am today, June 6.
Police Spokesperson, Onome Onovwakpoyeya confirmed the incident in a terse statement.
She noted that the injured policeman is responding to treatment while police are on the trail of the attackers.
She said: “Three persons including a Police Officer who was returning home after the close of work, were shot at the Abaomege-Oshinkwo Communal crises area by Oshinkwo Warriors.
“The victims were rushed to the hospital. Two of the victims were confirmed dead but the Policeman is responding to treatment.
“Intensive Manhunt is on for the fleeing Suspects. This happened at about 0700hrs of today 06/062023.”
It could not be ascertained which of the communities launched the attack.
A viral message on social media had advised people to avoid the area.
“Avoid Abaomege-Ishinkwo axies today being 6/6/2023. Three people from Ukawu and one happens to be my Uncle’s wife were shut dead earlier this morning on their way to Abakaliki.
“Ishinkwo and Abaomege crisis has done more harm than good to my people cum my family in particular,” said the message credited to one Nweke Nwali who hails from the area.
The decades long crisis has led to many deaths and destruction of properties worth millions over the years.
Despite the state government recently announcing that it had taken over the disputed land, the crisis has continued.
