Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has called on the private sector and patriotic citizens to join hands to ensure that the widows and children of fallen heroes are properly taken care of.
Governor Uzodimma made the remark at the armed forces remembrance day held at Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu Square in Owerri.
He noted that government would continue to support the families they left behind
“Today reminds us of our responsibilities as citizens of the country who are patriotic. It is not only the job of the government to ensure that the death of these our dead heroes does not bring continuous sorrow and hardship to relatives left behind.”
Senator Uzodimma thanked the leadership of Nigeria military for the commitment they have shown every year in making the ceremony successful.
A special prayer was offered for the repose of the souls of the soldiers who paid a supreme sacrifice in protecting the territorial integrity of the nation.
Laying of wreath at the tomb of an unknown soldier, 21 gun salutes, a minute silence for the fallen heroes, signing of armed forces register and releasing of pigeons which symbolises peace were all part of events to mark the day.
