Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 Presidential Election, Peter Obi, has urged Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State to institute a “Hall of Fame” as a way of immortalising former players of Rangers International Football club.
Obi said this at the service of songs for two former players of Rangers International, Stanley Okoronkwo and Harrison Mecha, who passed on recently.
The former governor of Anambra State said there was need for Nigeria to celebrate their past heroes to serve as a source of motivation to upcoming generations.
“Let’s celebrate those who have sacrificed their lives for the good of the country and humanity.
“It is only in this country that nobody celebrates anybody. People must celebrate individuals for their contributions to the country,” Obi said.
The former governor urged Enugu State to establish a Hall of Fame inside the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium for all former Rangers players to immortalise each of them when they die.
“We need to build a hall of fame for old Rangers players where their names will be remembered by the new generation of players.
“This is what is obtained in advanced countries where those who sacrificed for the country and humanity are recognised and remembered for their services,” he said.
Obi, who is also the Grand Patron of former Rangers International players described ex-players of the club as icons, who served their fatherland passionately during their active days.
He assured both families of the decessed ex-players that he would assist them in any capacity he can.
Governor Peter Mbah, who was represented by Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Lloyd Ekweremadu, expressed appreciation to Obi for his immense financial contributions to the ex-Rangers players.
