The Chairman of the Enugu State Handball Association, Emmanuel Asogwa, has said that the state handball team was hopeful of winning medals at the forthcoming National Sports Festival in Ogun.
Asogwa said this while speaking to Sports Writers on the preparations of the state handball team for the games on Tuesday in Enugu.
“We are prepared for the festival; we are not just going there to participate, we going there hoping to win medals.
“You know we are representing the South-East zone for the male handball following our qualification from the zonal eliminations,” he said.
The chairman commended the Enugu State Government for supporting the team in several ways.
According to him, the state had so far paid for the accreditation of the contingents, paid for the transportation to Ogun, paid for canvass, T-shirts and branding of Jersey.
“On the part of the association, we have produced branded T-shirts, which the team will be wearing before their games and we are still looking out for more partnerships.
“We are hopeful of getting more people to support the Enugu State Handball team,” he said.
Asogwa added that due to the support from the state government, the handball team could not aim at anything less than medals.
“Not about Enugu State alone but the whole South-East are looking upto us for a good representation.
“So, I urge our boys to put in their utmost best to win medals, so that we can see something to present to the governor and other stakeholders in the zone.
“We must make both Enugu State and South-East proud,” Asogwa said.
The team Enugu qualifed during the recent South-East zonal elimination.
They beat Team Abia 28-24 in a keenly contested game, and in the second game, Team Enugu beat team Anambra 29-15 to book a place in Ogun.
The National Sports Festival, tagged: “Ogun 2025” is scheduled to begin on May 16.
