President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has honoured Nigeria’s senior women’s football team, the Super Falcons, with national awards, cash gifts, and housing, following their historic victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
At a celebratory reception held in their honour at the State House, Abuja, the President conferred the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on all 24 players and 11 technical crew members of the team.
In addition to the national honour, each team member will receive a three-bedroom apartment under the federal government’s Renewed Hope Housing Scheme, as well as a cash reward of $100,000 (in naira equivalent). Each member of the technical crew will receive $50,000 equivalent.
“You have inspired millions, especially young girls who now see proof that their dreams are valid and achievable,” President Tinubu said.
“You have inspired me, too. And it’s great for a nation to have assets that are the hope of today, tomorrow, and the day after. You represent that hope. You ignited that hope.”
The President recalled the dramatic moments of the final match, saying it stirred emotions nationwide.
“Honestly, I didn’t want to watch the match. I didn’t want high blood pressure. But when the game turned, my spirit—and the spirit of the nation—was lifted,” he said with a smile, joking that the First Lady almost abandoned his dinner because of the tension.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in sports, particularly in women’s football and youth development.
“Your story is a story of hope. And in this era of Renewed Hope, we celebrate you not just as champions of Africa, but as champions of the Nigerian dream.”
In a further show of appreciation, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), through its chairman, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, announced a ₦10 million donation to each team member and technical staff, on behalf of the 36 state governors.
Meanwhile, the First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, described the Super Falcons as symbols of courage and excellence.
“You played with passion, confidence, and an unshakeable belief in yourselves. The zeal you displayed on the pitch was inspirational,” she said, expressing confidence that the team could go on to win the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Responding, Team captain, Rasheedat Ajibade, said the WAFCON victory was dedicated to every young Nigerian girl who dares to dream.
“This 10th title is not just a trophy. It is a celebration of the unyielding Nigerian spirit. On behalf of my teammates, we express our heartfelt gratitude for your support and belief in us,” she said.
Ajibade also appealed for sustained government and stakeholder investment in women’s football, saying the team was ready to do even more on the global stage.
On his part, the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, described the Super Falcons’ victory as a “symbol of national unity, resilience, and excellence,” noting that the support of the Tinubu administration had significantly boosted sports and women’s empowerment.
“In those 90 minutes, Nigerians from all regions held their breath, prayed, and celebrated together. That is the power of sports and the power of Nigerian women,” Dikko said.
