Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has encouraged the Super Eagles not to be discouraged by their defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo in Sunday’s 2026 World Cup qualifying playoff in Morocco.
In a statement after the game, Obi said he understood how disappointing the result was for the players and the millions of Nigerians who had hoped for a victory. He commended the team for their hard work and sacrifice, noting that wearing the nation’s colours comes with the weight of high expectations.
Obi urged the players to use the setback as motivation to rebuild and return stronger.
“Great teams are defined by their response to adversity,” he said.
“What matters now is how we stand, regroup, and rebuild with greater discipline, focus, and preparedness. I am confident you can rise stronger.”
He reminded the team that one defeat does not define their future, adding that the nation still firmly believes in their potential.
“Do not let today overshadow the greatness of tomorrow. The eagle never bows its head; it lifts its wings,” Obi said.
He encouraged the players to remain committed and keep their morale high, expressing confidence that Nigeria would “soar again.”
The Super Eagles were beaten by DR Congo in a crucial playoff match played in Morocco, ending their World Cup qualification hopes. The team is expected to regroup ahead of the nations cup in December.
