About 1,000 athletes are expected to compete in 26 sporting events as Abia State hosts its first-ever Tertiary Education Sports Fiesta.
The four-day event, scheduled for November 26–29, will hold simultaneously at the Umuahia Township Stadium and Ibeku High School.
Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Uche Eme Uche, and the Commissioner for Sports, Nwaobilor Ananaba, announced this during a joint press conference in Umuahia.
Prof. Uche said the fiesta aims to identify and nurture sporting talents among undergraduates of both public and private tertiary institutions in the state. She disclosed that Governor Alex Otti has approved ₦500,000 logistical support for each participating institution, in addition to the state’s provision of feeding and accommodation for athletes.
She explained that the initiative is designed to provide opportunities for undergraduates—often neglected in sports development—to showcase their abilities and embrace positive engagement.
“We initiated this to productively engage the energies of our young people in tertiary institutions who are always overlooked,” she said. “If they know they can play, they won’t remember to indulge in cultism or other nefarious activities.”
Prof. Uche added that the fiesta would also promote inclusive education and serve as a platform to unveil the New Abia Pioneers Club, whose members will champion the new Abia values.
Speaking also, Sports Commissioner Anaba said the fiesta reflects Governor Otti’s commitment to youth development and grassroots sports.
“It’s to identify stars that will replace our existing stars—elite athletes who will represent Abia, win medals, and serve as ambassadors of the state,” he said.
He revealed that, in addition to mainstream sports, lesser-known events such as aquatic competitions will be featured. He added that a proposal for an Olympic-size swimming pool has been submitted to the Governor and is expected to receive approval.
