By Chidi Anselm Odinkalu The office of Attorney-General of the Federation is the only ministerial office or department created directly by Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution. Described in section 150(1) as “the Chief Law Officer of the Federation,” the Attorney-General is also supposed to be the repository and defender of the country’s highest constitutional and civic values. The acronym, HAGF, for “Honorable Attorney-General of the Federation,” assumes that the occupant of the position embodies the trinity of honour, integrity, and professionalism. Reflecting the challenging nature of the role, the office used to be occupied by persons (so far, all men) of some…

By Osita Chidoka I saw the video of the attack on INEC staff and the killing of one of them by hooded armed men. The voice-over announced the date and repeated no more elections in the South-East. The attack saddened me, as my heart went out to the dead and the kidnapped. Even the Christian week of lent was not a deterrent in a profoundly Christian community like Igboland. I condemn the attack. Again, I appeal to the unknown gunmen to stop the killings. The strategy of armed insurrection to achieve a political end is not a successful method. We…

Look at it this way: Should he settle for Bola Tinubu, a man who is weighed down by hefty corruption baggage but on alliance with his political structure, Buhari rode to success in 2015 after several misses in the past… Or Yemi Osibanjo, his dutiful Vice President who is seen by many as highly pretentious and currently rocked by weighty allegations of…
